Asbestos Exposure and Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a particularly dangerous type of cancer that is linked exclusively to asbestos exposure. Asbestos becomes lodged in the lung lining, or the lining of other organs, and over time asbestos lung diseases can erupt, including not only mesothelioma, but also asbestosis or asbestos lung cancer. The most common type of mesothelioma occurs in the lung lining and is called pleural mesothelioma. When diagnosed, mesothelioma is identified by one of its cancer cell types. The three types of cancer cells are epithelioid mesothelioma, biphasic mesothelioma and sarcomatoid mesothelioma. The prognosis for mesothelioma patients is not good. Typically patients live only 1 to 2 years after a firm diagnosis has been made. The prognosis depends on the type of cancer, biphasic cancer patients have the shortest time, followed by epithelioid and sarcomatoid cancer.
