LASIK Surgery – Vision Correction Procedures
LASIK is actually an acronym for laser in-situ keratomileusis. LASIK is performed by medical doctors who have attended medical school and a subsequent residency program in ophthalmology. Laser eye surgery is performed using an excimer laser. The excimer laser changes the shape of the cornea in order to reduce nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. Some LASIK techniques are also being used to correct presbyopia, which is age-related farsightedness. To perform LASIK, a corneal flap is created. Before the laser is used, this flap is folded back, and then the laser ablates the corneal tissue in order to change its shape. After the excimer laser is used, the flap is folded back in place. There are two options to create the corneal flap, a microkeratome, which is a blade, or a femtosecond laser.
Laser Vision Correction Procedures
Laser vision correction can also be performed without creating a flap. This is sometimes referred to as surface ablation. PRK and LASEK are the most common types of surface ablation procedures. Some of the featured laser eye surgeons on this page offer surface ablation in addition to LASIK. When you visit their offices for a consultation, you should ask the surgeon to explain the various types of laser eye surgery procedures. Then you will want to discuss with the surgeon and his or her staff which option is best to correct your vision. Hopefully, the procedure should eliminate your dependence on glasses or contact lenses.
